Les rabbins rejetèrent comme livres extérieurs :
- les livres apocryphes; apocryphes ("cachés") appelés aussi deutérocanoniques ("entrés dans le canon dans une deuxième phase") par les auteurs catholiques .
Conservés dans la traduction grecque des Septante et dans la traduction latine de la Vulgate, ces livres sont reconnus par l'Église catholique, admis sans plus par les Églises orthodoxes et rejetés, de manière plus ou moins tranchée, par les diverses Églises protestantes. Écrits par des juifs en hébreu, araméen ou grec , ils sont au nombre de sept :
Judith, Tobit, 1er et 2ème livre des Maccabées, Sagesse, Siracide, Baruch auxquels s'ajoutent des suppléments en grec aux livres d'Esther, de Daniel et de Jérémie
- les livrespseudépigraphes;pseudépigraphes ("attribué à un autre auteur") appelés aussi apocryphes par les auteurs catholiques .
Bien que reconnus pour quelques-uns à certaines périodes ou par certaines Églises, ils furent finalement rejetés par pratiquement toutes les Églises chrétiennes. Ouvrages écrits par des juifs et parfois remaniés par des chrétiens, ils sont conservés en très grand nombre (il n'en n'existe pas de liste officielle reconnue) et dans plusieurs langues anciennes : hébreu, araméen , grec, latin,éthiopien , arménien, syriaque, vieux-slave.
Cette terminologie est confuse et conventionnelle . Bien qu'elle ne s'applique pas parfaitement aux textes bibliques , elle se retrouve dans tous les ouvrages modernes et doit être utilisée telle quelle.
